In planning for our Coastal Farmhouse Master Bedroom Makeover for the One Room Challenge, I knew that I wanted to add a cozy rug to our master bedroom. Given the coastal farmhouse style I’m going for, I was looking for the perfect blue area rugs. Since I could only add one rug to my bedroom, today I’m sharing all of the rugs I thought about ordering!
It gets cold here in the winter, and I know it would feel so much better to step out of bed in the morning onto a rug! Another benefit is that it protects our flooring from any damage done from the bed. We already have a few nicks in the floor from our old metal bed frame, so adding a new area rug will help prevent more.

While I love the farmhouse style, most rugs in that category are white/cream/neutral. Not only am I not big on “neutral” items, but our 2 dogs sleep in our room each night. A light colored rug is not ideal for that, because our Pickle dog loves to sleep on the floor. As adorable as it would be to have a Pickle-shaped dirt spot on the rug, it’s not the look I’m going for. That meant I knew I wanted an area rug with some colour!
When designing a space, I always start with a moodboard in Photoshop. This lets me see how all of the patterns and colors work together, and made it easier to eliminate some choices. I was fine with navy, aqua, turquoise, anything in the blue family. There were even a few heavily mixed color rugs with a lot of pinks and oranges that I loved. Unfortunately, I knew my husband would prefer one with little to no pink.
As I made my mood board, I was eliminating a lot of navy rugs because it was making the room feel too dark. Instead, I started focusing on lighter blue area rugs and was able to find the perfect one much quicker! Here are a few of my favorite blue area rugs that I found:
Best Navy Blue Blue Area Rugs
The Hillsby Orange/Navy Area Rug is one of my all time favourite rugs! I seriously considered using it in our bedroom, but in the end it was just a bit too orange for the space. I think I’m going to get it for our basement when we’re ready to finish it though! It also comes in a few different color options so you have a variety of choices.
The Annabel Navy/Light Blue Area Rug by Bungalow Rose was my second choice. I almost ordered it a few times, but I kept thinking a lighter rug would work best in the space.
I fell in love with the Stuart Blue/Beige Area Rug by Zipcode Design as soon as I saw it. I think it would look amazing in any room, but it would look best as a statement piece. Since I have an accent wall AND a large bed, I didn’t want to be drawing attention to too many different spots in the room.
Best Aqua/Light Blue Area Rugs
I LOVE the colors in the Babb Diamond Turquoise Area Rug by Bungalow Rose, but the shade didn’t quite fit the room. I would love to put this in the house somewhere, but my husband would likely say “too much pink”.
You can get this rug on Wayfair.ca.
Same as above, LOVE the Parlin Diamond Teal Area Rug by Nicole Miller – but it was not the right shade for the space. This would be adorable in a little boy’s nursery!
I was very close to ordering the Khalil Cream/Blue Area Rug by Ophelia & Co. because it’s just so beautiful! This one would work in pretty much any room since it’s relatively neutral.
What I love about the Amhurst Aqua Area Rug by Lark Manor is how neutral it is, even being a blue area rug. Blue is a neutral, right?!
Since I was going for a COLORFUL space, so I opted for the Rugshop Traditional Bohemian Vintage Area Rug in Blue! I just love that it’s the perfect mix of colors, but they’re subtle. The most noticeable color is a light blue, and it worked perfectly for my Coastal Farmhouse Master Bedroom.
It was also SUPER affordable, at just under $100 for a 5″ x 7.9″ rug, which is the largest size we could easily fit in this small room.
Best Multi-toned Blue Area Rugs
The Ashburn Dark Blue Area Rug by Mistana is beautiful! It’s a mix of navy blue, purple, and orange, but was just a little too dark for my space. It also comes in a few different color options!
This Lennert Light Blue/Fuchsia Area Rug by Mistana is BEAUTIFUL, but had “too much pink”. I think this would be adorable in a nursery or little girl’s room!
