Looking for affordable AND adorable Christmas decor on a budget? Make this DIY Glitter Believe Sign that requires ZERO POWER TOOLS!!
I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love decorating for Christmas. I don’t love snow, or winter, but there is just something magical about the entire Christmas season. It turns dark, dreary winters into a sparkly winter wonderland! Christmas lights, glittery decorations and (for the most part), it’s the time of year where people put their differences aside and are kinder to one another.
Unfortunately, Christmas can also be a very expensive time of year. Which is why I do my best to DIY my decor as much as possible. I’ve teamed up with a group of bloggers to bring you six AFFORDABLE ways to decorate your home this Christmas season! Whether you’re decorating your guest room for the holidays, making ornaments for your tree or making some christmas wall decor – we’ve got you covered.

My project is this ADORABLE DIY Glitter Believe Sign – made completely without power tools! I do have a Silhouette cutting machine that I LOVE, but it is a pretty expensive machine if you don’t use it frequently. I would love to try wood working and cutting out intricate letters, but I don’t trust myself enough to not chop my fingers off in the process. So how was I to make an adorable, 3D sign like the ones I was seeing all over Pinterest??
Pre-made wood cutouts!
For less than $20 total, I was able to get a 22 x 11 Rectangle Whitewashed Wood Plaque By ArtMinds™ and a perfectly sized Believe Wood Word By ArtMinds™ to make this DIY Glitter Believe Sign! I bought them when they were buy one, get one free to save some $$$. You could also wait for a 50% off sale or use a coupon. If you have scrap wood lying around in the right size, you can even save a bit more and use your own wood for the sign! I opted to just get the pre-made wooden sign instead of having to wait around to find the perfect sized board at home.
DIY Glitter Believe Sign Supply List:
Rectangle Whitewashed Wood Plaque By ArtMinds™ (or any scrap piece of wood)
Believe Wood Word By ArtMinds™ (mine was from Michaels, but any word works!)
Foam brush
Red paint (I used Imperial Red Chalk Paint by Folk Art which is one of my favourite Christmas colours to use!)
Red glitter
Mod Podge (I found this little tube at Dollar Tree!)
Super Glue or Wood Glue

That’s it! There are not many supplies needed for this SUPER EASY DIY Glitter Believe Sign! There’s very few steps involved, too. This is what my blank board looked like to start with:

I chose it because not only was it the perfect size for the ‘Believe’ cut out, but it also has an awesome rustic white wash look to it. I wanted the ‘believe’ to really stand out so a neutral white background was perfect. If you’re using a plain wood board that you already have on hand, you can stain it and then whitewash if you’d like, and maybe some distressing too. It’s completely up to you what you want your sign to look like!
This is what the ‘Believe’ looks like before painting.. pretty basic, but perfect for what I wanted!

How to Make a DIY Glitter Believe Sign
To start, you’ll cover the front and sides with a very quick coat of Imperial Red Chalk Paint by Folk Art. Remember, you’ll cover it with glitter later so you don’t need to worry about doing a super even coat. Just make sure it is covered so that the wood colour doesn’t end up peeking through any glitter. Since the back will be stuck to the board, painting it is completely optional. I chose not to!

If red doesn’t match your Christmas decor (which seems bizarre to think about, given that it IS a classic Christmas colour!), this would also look adorable in gold or silver glitter. Or even with a dark stained board, and white glitter wording! The possibilities are ENDLESS.
Once your paint has dried, apply a liberal coat of Mod Podge to your ‘believe’. As soon as it’s on, it’s time for GLITTER!
I’m sure you’ve glittered something before, or maybe your kids have – and you know how much of a MESS it makes. Make sure you place a big newspaper or sheets of paper underneath your cut out to catch all of the glitter. As messy as it is, it’s pretty simple – just pour your glitter right over top of your wet mod podge. Once it’s completely covered, shake all the excess glitter off (back onto the paper).

Very messy. Once all the glitter been shaken off, carefully pour your leftover glitter back into the container it came from. If needed, add a second coat of glitter. I had great coverage with the first one, so I only did one. Once that was dry, give it a final coat (or two) of Mod Podge. This will help to keep (most of) the glitter in place. Of course, you know it’s impossible to keep ALL of the glitter in place. Some will still fall off for years to come, no matter how much Mod Podge is on there.
Once your Mod Podge has dried, it’s time to stick it to the wood! You could use wood glue for this (I ran out!), but I just used a little jar of dollar store super glue I had on hand. (Did I mention this project can be done for CHEAP?!?) Apply a thin line of it on the back of each letter, right in the middle. Try your best to keep away from the sides to prevent the glue from seeping over the edges!
Make sure your word is centered (I used a mix of measuring and eyeballing-it). Then, stick it down to the board! I placed it on the table, and then stacked some heavy stuff on top of it to make sure it was really STUCK. Come back in a few hours and there it is! Your very own DIY Glitter Believe Sign!

This sign is going to be a part of my VERY first mantle decorated for Christmas. Last year, we got an electric fireplace and finally got the TV mounted on the wall – which means I have my very own mantle to decorate each season! I’m still working on the complete styling – so stay tuned for that reveal!
