Welcome to Week 4 of the one room challenge! If you’re new here, over six weeks I’m taking our boring bedroom and turning it into a dreamy coastal farmhouse master bedroom as part of the One Room Challenge. Today, I’m showing you a peek at our new custom nightstands from a thrifted desk!
For anyone new to the One Room Challenge, this is a six week challenge where bloggers + Instagrammers makeover a space in six short weeks and share the process! Thank you to the One Room Challenge for organizing the challenge every year, and to Better Homes & Gardens who is the official media partner. Here’s a recap of what I’m doing to this space:

Week Four: Custom Nightstands from a Thrifted Desk
Week Five: Coastal Gallery Wall
Week Six: Coastal Farmhouse Master Bedroom Reveal!
Unfortunately, I got some bad news this week. It’s looking like my Bridgeport Bed from The Brick will not be here before the One Room Challenge ends. Womp womp. I’m really disappointed in that, as I was told when ordering that it would likely be earlier than the expected delivery date. I called them to get an update since I hadn’t heard from them, which is when I found out it was actually delayed. Would have been nice to have a heads up!
For now, I’m still trucking along with this makeover and will just have to make do until the bed does come. Like I said, this week I tackled some DIY nightstands from a thrifted desk! I have had this old desk for over a year, and I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it.
I paid a whopping $9 for this desk last summer, and it was the PERFECT candidate to turn into nightstands! I’ve seen the idea all over Pinterest but could never find the perfect desk to work with. I wasn’t sure how easy it would be to take it apart, but it ended up being a breeze because of how it was made.
The hardest part of this makeover was deciding what color to paint the nightstands. I would have loved to keep them wood, but it was not in great shape – especially on the sides.
Since they’re going beside a white bed, I was hesitant to paint them white in case it didn’t match exactly. I didn’t want to go too dark since they would also be up against the navy blue vertical shiplap accent wall. I tried doing a white wash, but they just looked like they had been painted with terrible coverage. So, how did I paint them in the end?
White. I added a bit of interest by lighting distressing them, but we’ll see how they compare to the white of the bed whenever it arrives. Honestly, I’m not 100% in love with these as it – but I’m waiting until the bed arrives to decide what to try next. It’s really hard to get decent photos of the space without revealing too much about the rest of it, because I want to save it for reveal week. So you’ll have to keep waiting for week six.
Stay tuned tomorrow, because I’m teaming up with a special group of bloggers to bring you a round up of awesome thrift store projects! It will include the full details for this project, and a ton more for inspiration.
